Matthew Dear, Carl Craig, Joakim cover Bowie on a new compilation on Rapster. Life Beyond Mars: Bowie Covered drops in early July.

Bowie might seem like an odd pick for electronic cover versions, but his relationship with electronics runs a lot deeper than his disastrous late ‘90s techno album Earthling. In the late seventies, Bowie’s Berlin trilogy especially dabbled with the genre: especially on the second sides of Heroes and Low, which were Krautrock-inspired instrumentals.

But it’s not just tracks from Bowie's late '70s peak which get a rinsing. NYC discoist bravely takes on ‘Magic Dance’ from Bowie’s Labyrinth soundtrack (1986), while Heartbreak covers ‘Loving the Alien’ from Tonight (1984). "The selected artist could choose any track from his catalog and create their own fresh interpretation, however faithful to, or different from the original,” explains Rapster.

You can preview Matthew Dear, Kelley Polar, Joakim and Au Revoir Simone tracks, as well as download an MP3 of Richard Walters & Faultline's take on ‘Be My Wife’ at Rapster’s dedicated Life on Mars site.

Tracklist

01 Au Revoir Simone - Oh! You Pretty Things
02 Heartbreak - Loving The Alien
03 Kelley Polar - Magic Dance
04 Leo Minor - Ashes To Ashes
05 Carl Craig Presents Zoos of Berlin - Looking For Water
06 Drew Brown - Sweet Thing
07 Matthew Dear - Sound & Vision
08 Susumu Yokota - Golden Years
09 The Emperor Machine - Repetition
10 Joakim & The Disco - A New Career In Town
11 Richard Walters & Faultline - Be My Wife
12 The Thing - Life On Mars

Thu, 31 Jul 2008Kelley Polar and the Thing being the best things on here? You need your ears cleaned out mate.

Since when was the key to a good cover sounding nothing like the original? Surely its more to do with re-contextualisation. Covers albums are always patchy but as they go this is a very good one with a high hit to miss ratio. I think one of the reasons so many of the artists stick close to Bowies sound is the intimidating quality of the originals - this is also perhaps why many of the artists... More

Thu, 31 Jul 2008Autechre remixing David Bowie? It wouldn't be recognizable...Flying Lotus would make a 'dope' anthem, I-F an electro slammer, Appleblim a smooth dub track, and Jeff Mills...would...just...........help me here, what words can I describe it with?

Thu, 26 Jun 2008be my wife is pretty good, cheers for the linkage man.

i really like this record - my friend is a dj so got a promo and i had a sneeky listen. the tracklisting is well spaced and its refreshing to hear bowie work without the bustle and bombast of heavy guitars (i bet mr bowie is sick to death of guitar bands!)

stand outs are the carl craig and matthew dear track, be my wife is well worth picking up too
