Winter Music Conference 2010

Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has been tapped to compile the latest edition of the Late Night Tales series.

If it seems ridiculous to add Helders among the likes of Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and Lindstrøm, it might be helpful to know that Helders was also a DJ in his youth, and recently playing at Ibiza Rocks and Field Day. What's more Helders is a producer, crafting remixes for artists such as Roots Manuva, We Are Scientists and Duran Duran. But enough of the justifications: How does it sound?

Looking at the track selection, we're thinking it's about as diverse as the artists that Helders has remixed. Hip-hop, soul, rock & roll, Modeselektor, Goblin? This is definitely a compilation for the moments after the club where you've heard the same genre for six hours straight.

In addition to the previously released material, Helders also includes two notable goodies for Monkeys fans. First up is a cover of Livin' Joy's "Dreamer," which features Nesreen Shah on vocals. The second, Monkey frontman Alex Turner reads us a nighttime story to put us to bed called, "A Choice of Three."

Tracklist
01. Goblin - Connexion
02. MF Doom /Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
03. Yamasuki - Yama Yama
04. Zeph & Azeem - Play the Drum
05. DJ Format - Charity Shop Soundclash
06. Little Barrie - Free Salute
07. The Black Keys - Thickfreakness
08. Matt Helders featuring Nesreen Shah - Dreamer (exclusive cover)
09. The Stooges - Dirt
10. Johnny & The Hurricanes - Sheba
11. Modeselektor feat Puppetmastaz - The Dark Side of the Sun
12. Mos Def - Ms. Fat Booty
13. Luniz - I Got 5 on It (Original Clean Short Mix)
14. The Coral - Grey Harpoon
15. Minnie Riperton - Reasons
16. Roots Manuva - Dreamy Days
17. Ty - Break The Lock
18. Simian Mobile Disco - I Believe
19. The Rapture - Olio
20. Alex Turner - A Choice of Three

Azuli/Stomp will release Matt Helders's entry into the Late Night Tales series on October 25, 2008.comment 15 Comments

Thu, 25 Sep 2008a wee bit of snobbery about whose mixing it going on,have a listen to it first.one of the snow patrol who i don't tend to listen to did a compilation-from the trip series and though sceptical about it had a listen and turned out to be a belter.quite a lot of the late night the series has been great so will give it a try.

Wed, 24 Sep 2008i agree, but dont think there's been a bad one in the 'another late night' or 'late night tales' series? the belle and sebastian one is a corker

Wed, 24 Sep 2008I couldn't give a flying fuck about this release. I'm sick of DJ compilations from members of rock/indie bands who compile a tracklist that doesn't work.

Tue, 23 Sep 2008does everyone know who Matt Helders is compared to Arctic Monkeys? putting the bands name on the front is not surprising, it will also get other Arctic fans in to the series which can only be a good thing

Tue, 23 Sep 2008I dont doubt they listen to good music as they are all very competent musicians who've come up with a great sound and approach towards the youth of their generation. They're quite a relevant band compared to most out there though not really my cup of tea.

However take a look at which is bigger on the front cover of the album:

Arctic Monkeys or Matt Helders?

And why does it say Arctic Monkeys twice?

Its a cash in mate c'mon. No two ways about it.
