Neuton and Pinnacle set to fold

The two distributors are set to go under, marking a bad week for the industry.

It's been a bad week for distributors, with news that both Neuton and Pinnacle are to fold.

In an e-mail sent out today by The Association of Independent Music, it was reported that Pinnacle has now gone into administration and labels should "take the necessary steps to protect your stock and your credit position." Whilst Pinnacle are more commonly associated with major labels and rock acts, This Is Not An Exit, R&S and Smalltown Supersound are amongst the imprints that utilize the distributor.

This follows news reported by FOEM earlier this week that Neuton have also announced to their distributed labels that they are insolvent. The German-based company serves a large amount of independent dance labels such as Perlon and Vakant.

You might think that the bad news ends there, but it also happens that Canadian distributor Fusion 3 has also let go of all of their label managers and sales reps. Electronic disco producer Andrew Allsgood wrote on DJHistory.com that "lagging retail sales combined with EMI's failure to handle the large catalogue are sited [sic] as reasons for the demise. I'm not sure where they stand with the distributed labels but I'm sure there are many small labels out there that'll not see any $$$ owed."

Those looking for a little bit of light, unfortunately, may be on a long search. It seems like the problems with the distribution network may not end here, Tiny Sticks' Duncan Stump (AKA Mock) in the same thread on DJHistory.com wrote, "I've only just recovered from when Amato went under, and although I'm not with Pinnacle, it'll have a serious knock on effect," presumably as labels scramble to locate another distributor to help find outlets for their releases going forward.comment 34 Comments

Fri, 12 Dec 2008Big loss to the industry, but not the end for vinyl by any means. Everything has just become more downsized and consolidated.

AFAIK, quite a few labels have already found new homes at the numerous vinyl distributors still up & running (and probably won't be going anywhere for sometime).

However, Neuton will be sorely missed

Fri, 12 Dec 2008i doubt hardly anyone is selling 5000 copies!!

you can not deny that vinyl sales are declining in this industry. it has been slow and steady over the last decade, fact.

Fri, 12 Dec 2008This would definitely be an ideal situation for labels - but how practical is it? The label would have to store and physically mail out all its own stock. This could be a total pain in the ass and very time consuming when other jobs need doing. Having worked for smaller labels I know that most often don't have the hours or man power to sort it out. Tricky situation.

Thu, 11 Dec 2008Last few dj mixes I've checked out have been nothing but the beatport top 50. Everyone is getting their tracks like this now. I don't even think they bother to listen to them before they buy the tracks. How can dj mixes from 10 different djs have 75% of the same tracks in them? They ain't using vinyl, thats for sure. What makes it worse is that digital format tracks (mp3s) all have this 'compressed shine' to them that makes it sound like every track came out the same studio.

There... More

Tue, 09 Dec 2008I remember going to Record Time in Roseville, Michigan, and looking for that 'made in germany' sticker that neuton slapped on all their records. So many of the early strange techno records I found I became aware of because of neuton and that little sticker. I wouldn't even have to ask how they were, if it had that sticker it went into my listening stack. R.I.P. guys. Thanks for the service over the years!

mp3 has no soul. maybe the music has, but not the format.
