December 31st: Hands down the most special day in the year's partying calendar. Whether you're going out on the town, or staying in for a house party, it seems like every man, woman and child is out to maximise their enjoyment on the final night of the year. Sure, both high expectations and prices are the norm, but there's simply no arguing with the quality of parties going on over the New Year.
If it's house and techno you're looking for, Berlin seems like the obvious place to bring in 2009. The big three clubs all have line-ups to make your mouth water, depending on what you're looking for. Perlon take over the 12th floor of Alexanderplatz's Weekend with one of their feted Superlongevity parties, with sets coming from
Matt John,
Daniel Bell,
Ricardo Villalobos and
Zip. If you're into your quirky minimal and want to dance the morning away as you watch the sun rise over the city, then that'll be the party for you.
If, on the other hand, you like your surroundings to be dark and industrial with the music to match, you could do a lot worse than head to Berghain's Klubnacht. With an all-star cast of their residents (
Marcel Dettmann,
Ben Klock,
Len Faki,
Cassy,
Prosumer and more) as well as sets from Dinky,
Luke Slater and techno stalwart
Adam Beyer, it promises to be one hell of a party. If you're looking for something a bit more saucy, disco professor
Daniel Wang will be one of the many DJs soundtracking the freaky sexual shenanigans going on in Berghain's Laboratory.
You won't get to see any sex in Watergate, but there'll be plenty of dancing fun to be had with music from
Sebo K,
Guido Schneider,
Konrad Black,
Sascha Funke and even a live set from
My My. It looks like this is the place to be for fans of
M_nus, as it will also see appearances from
Magda,
Marc Houle and
Heartthrob.
Tired of the usual techno tourism nightspots? Maria am Ostbahnhof might be your best bet. Both
Thomas Brinkmann and
Fehlmann will be on hand, and there'll be a chance to check out
Deadbeat's new live set for fans of dubwise dance floor action. There's also a party at .Bhc featuring
DFA's Justin Miller and
Gomma's Diskokaine for disco fans who don't want to risk a venture into the Laboratory for Daniel Wang's set.
Elsewhere,
Blake Baxter will be taking things back to the old school at Tresor, Icon hosts
Ed Banger's Vicarious Bliss and
Trickski will play Cookies alongside
Tiefschwarz. With most of the parties going well into Thursday daytime, we're sure that you'll find plenty of kicks in Berlin this New Year's Eve.
