December 31st: Hands down the most special day in the year's partying calendar. Whether you're going out on the town, or staying in for a house party, it seems like every man, woman and child is out to maximise their enjoyment on the final night of the year. Sure, both high expectations and prices are the norm, but there's simply no arguing with the quality of parties going on over the New Year.

New Year's Eve
Adelaide residents will be thankful that they won't have to travel for a night of good electronic music, as Future Classic will be hosting a live set from A Guy Called Gerald at Sugar. Melburnians, on the other hand, will have a few choices this night with San Franciscan house DJ Jay-J headlining the harbourside Sunsetpeople party at Alumbra and Sensation White at the city's huge Telstra Dome, which will see sets from Fedde Le Grand, Marco V and Erick Morillo.

The man sometimes known as Li'l Mo Ying Yang will also be playing in Sydney that night, headlining a party at Home. He's got stiff competition in that locale, however, with a menagerie of hot NYE events on offer. Carl Craig will play at Chinese Laundry, while Ed Banger bring DJ Mehdi and label owner Busy P over to play at the Oxford Art Factory. Def Mix legend David Morales joins Ron Carroll at The Loft & Bungalow for a night of old school house music, while the cream of Sydney's local talent will play at Ken Cloud's Mad Racket party at Marrickville Recreation Centre. Revellers who fancy a bit of a party on the sand will be glad to know that there'll be a big event on Bondi Beach. As lovers of bad puns, we're happy to tell you that the event is called Shore Thing, and will host sets from Underworld and Eric Prydz, whilst hometown heroes The Presets will play live.

Stuck in New Zealand? No sweat: Rhythm & Vines is a three-day festival of epic proportions that will have Carl Cox and Recloose bringing in the New Year in style among many, many others.

New Year's Day
For those with enough stamina to keep on going, there are big parties in both Sydney and Melbourne on New Year's Day. Going back to Melbourne, we've got much of the crew from Sydney's Shore Thing coming over for Summadayze 2009 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl (Underworld headlines) and the much-needed-after-a-night-of-drinking Hot Barbeque with sets from Boys Noize, Carl Craig, Radio Slave and others.

Matt Edwards will be fresh from Sydney's Spice Afloat boat party, which is set to also include Simon Baker, Jamie Lloyd and others, while the city will also be hosting its edition of Field Day over at The Domain where Digitalism, Trentemøller, Jamie Lidell and plenty more will be rocking throughout the day as well.

Sun, 01 Mar 2009We had a pretty good time in NZ at Canaan Downs Festival.

Not an international in sight but heaps of local producers. The dance scene here is sort of on the back burner slightly but encouraging to hear lots of wicked homegrown muisc.

Would of been nice to be at the Chinese Laundry though with Carl Craig. crumbs
