  • SoundCloud is expanding its Premier service. Available as an invite-only beta product since launching four years ago, SoundCloud Premier is now open to the public, giving eligible artists the chance to earn money from original music uploaded to the platform. If you have a Pro or Pro Unlimited account and have had at least 5000 plays in the last month in SoundCloud-monetised countries (currently the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand), you can receive direct monthly payouts. Artists get a 55 percent net revenue share on original music. Content such as DJ mixes and podcasts are not currently eligible, but SoundCloud CEO Kerry Trainor told Billboard that they are "interested in exploring" including them in the service. As The Verge points out, revenue will come via advertising and subscriptions. This means artists are not paid a flat rate per stream and that payments can fluctuate each month. The news comes in the wake of Spotify's own direct-monetisation offering, which offers artists 50 percent of net revenues from the songs they upload.
