- The local authorities have received 345 complaints in the past two years, mostly for noise pollution.
Ibiza's San Antonio council has levied nearly €1.4 million in fines at venues in The West End since new licensing laws were passed in January 2017.
According to Diario De Ibiza, the fines fall into two groups. One group (€630,000) is currently being collected by the tax office, while another (€747,000) is still being processed. The latter amount is spread among 20 venues in the popular party district—the worst of which has received 93 noise complaints since 2017, accruing €247,000 in fines.
In total, the local council has received 345 complaints since the controversial new laws were introduced. Most of the complaints are for noise infractions or promoting events without permission. In addition to the fines, some venues may have to close for a period of 85 days. The seven worst offenders are all located on the same street, Santa Agnès.
In January 2017, the area encompassing The West End was declared a Special Acoustic Protection Zone (ZPAE) after noise levels regularly peaked 20db above the lawful limit during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. As well as limiting sound levels, the laws also imposed a 3 AM curfew.
