  • Sähkö Recordings is starting a new archival series chronicling unreleased work from cofounder Mika Vainio, announced on what would have been his 56th birthday. The first ARC release comes out in early June and will feature excerpts of a 1994 Vainio live set under his solo alias Ø. The performance was originally broadcast on Ambient City, a radio show run by Tommi Grönlund, who started Sähkö with Vainio in 1993. Around the same time Blast First Petite is also releasing a book called Psychopomp For M.T.V. 15.05.63 Ð 12.04.2017, featuring photographs from Vainio's family, various texts from his associates and friends and a transcript of Vainio's Invisible Jukebox interview with The Wire from 2013. There will also be an updated and complete Mika Vainio discography, and a bonus CD containing unreleased recordings of a Pan Sonic live show on Easter Island. (The word psychopomp refers to a spiritual guide that escorts deceased souls to the afterlife.) Cafe Oto in London will host a Mika Vainio birthday celebration and book launch featuring live performances from Russell Haswell, Pita, Ilpo Väisänen and more, going down on May 18th and 19th. ARC 1 comes out on June 7th while the book lands on the 21st. Listen to clips of ARC 1 over at Boomkat.
