  • VCV Rack 1.0 is out now. The free open-source software has helped reduce the barrier to entry to modular synthesis since launching back in 2017, and the new update represents a major step toward it becoming a truly professional tool. It can now operate polyphonically with up to 16 voices—something that's difficult and expensive to achieve on a hardware modular. Another major improvement is the implementation of MIDI output, meaning you can use virtual modules to control any hardware or software device with a MIDI input. The controls on the virtual modules themselves can now be MIDI mapped, meaning you can use the sliders, knobs and keys on your MIDI controller to sweep parameters within the software. The CPU engine has also been improved so you can run more modules without maxing out the software. You can see the full list of improvements here. VCV Rack 1.0 runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. You can download it here. Read our review of the original VCV Rack.
