  • Chee Shimizu, a mainstay of Tokyo's experimental music scene, has teamed up with Japanese guitarist miku-mari on a new EP. Created from improvised performances, Reconstructions is a two-tracker due out on January 29th via Los Angeles-based label ESP Institute. It's the first time Shimizu, a producer, writer and DJ, has released on the imprint since contributing to the 2009 compilation Concentration Volume 1. For Reconstructions, Shimizu sampled field recordings, live windchimes and the Andean chajchas, a type of rattle instrument. miku-mari, whose real name is Takahiro Matsumura, used a guitar-controlled synthesizer, Tibetan bells and pyramid crystals among other elements. The artists are regular collaborators at the low-key but influential Tokyo venue Forestlimit. For more on Shimizu, revisit Aaron Coultate's 2017 feature. After Reconstructions, ESP Institute's next release will be a new Lord Of The Isles single, "Skylark," featuring a remix by Linkwood. Listen to snippets of Reconstructions.
