Top electro crooner Sebastien Tellier steps into the mainstream as France’s entry for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Tellier is heading for household name status in France, but elsewhere he still remains a cult item, a state of affairs he is reportedly unhappy with. “Yes, I am considered as a trendy singer,” he told French TV talk show T’empêche tout le monde de dormir this week. “But I am not intellectual at all. I hope this experience will help me get out of the underground world”.
Mr. Tellier will perform the song ‘Devine’ at Eurovision, a track taken from his new album Sexuality. In a move bound to offend Gallic nationalists, it will be the first time France’s Eurovision entry will be performed in English. “I went to studio and tried to put French words on it,” Tellier told T’empêche. “But I was not satisfied at all with the result. It will be in English. Unfortunately for France.”
Tellier’s competition for the coveted Eurovision title this year includes former bin man Andy Abraham from British TV show X Factor, and a puppet turkey named Dustin, who will be singing for Ireland.
