The weekly RA Exchange is a series of conversa- tions with artists, labels and promoters shaping the electronic music landscape.

RA.EX103 Simon Dunmore

Defected in the house.

Simon Dunmore is the man behind Defected Records, one of the world's biggest house labels. He's a music biz lifer, working as much behind the scenes at record stores and labels as he has in front of them as a DJ. After a number of years at a major label, Dunmore decided to start up his own imprint. Defected's first release, Soulsearchers' "Can't Get Enough," was a UK top 10 hit, and paved the way for plenty more from the likes of Bob Sinclar and Kings of Tomorrow. Dunmore has also added an events side to the business: Defected in the House travels to clubs around the world, perhaps most notably holding down a weekly residency each summer in Ibiza at Pacha. Despite all of this success, a label that teeters between underground and mainstream like Defected has less room for error than ever in 2012. Earlier this month, RA's Stephen Titmus explored how the label is faring these days, the "perception problem" that Dunmore feels they suffer from and the chances of his beloved football club QPR in the Premier League next season.
