  • Eric Estornel looks beyond his hits.

  • There's more to Eric Estornel than meets the eye. He's made his name as Maceo Plex, conquering Ibiza and beyond with his epic take on house and techno. But Maceo Plex's success is a relatively recent development in Estornel's career, which stretches back to the early '90s and spans electro, minimal and experimental. (He's even had an EP on Modern Love.) Born in Miami to Cuban parents, he spent his formative years in Dallas before relocating to Europe after growing frustrated with the lack of opportunities available to him as an artist in the US. He settled first in Valencia, and it was here that Estornel conceived of the Maceo Plex project, moving away from the tougher techno of his Maetrik alias. After spending years grinding to make ends meet, he blew up almost overnight as Plex, thanks to his debut album and a string of catchy club hits on Crosstown Rebels. That period may have catapulted him to stardom, but as Carlos Hawthorn found out this summer in Ibiza, it's a time Estornel reflects back on with mixed emotions.
