Recent RA Exchanges

The weekly RA Exchange is a series of conversa- tions with artists, labels and promoters shaping the electronic music landscape.

RA.EX076 Finn Johannsen

Hard Wax, Macro Recordings and Hamburg's legendary Front club: In conversation with the Berlin-based music biz lifer.

Finn Johannsen is a DJ, a label owner, a writer and a record store clerk and not necessarily in that order. The Hard Wax employee co-runs Macro Recordings with Stefan Goldmann, but his beginnings in the world of electronic music were more modest than that might suggest. He grew up in Kiel, a town outside of Hamburg. Early on, he was a soul boy, but after hearing a DJ named Klaus Stockhausen at a club called Front, his tastes turned to house. Stockhausen's DJing style privileged versatility over fluidity, and you can see that in the way Johannsen DJs as well. He's at home at nearly any time signature or tempo. The Macro label is equally as wide-ranging, releasing material from Peter Kruder (of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame), techno three piece Elektro Guzzi and Oni Ayhun. RA's Todd L. Burns talked to Johannsen about all of the above and more last month.
