Panorama Bar resident Steffi gets deep on this week's edition of the RA podcast.
Because she's a DJ, but prefers not to produce all that much, you might not know the name Steffi. But as anyone who has been to the Panorama Bar recently will attest, you're not likely to forget one of her trademark deep house-inclined sets. It's a varied sound that takes deepness as its center and then spins it out to include house, techno and even a bit of acid.
That eclecticism can also be heard on the imprint that she runs with Dutch producer Dexter, Klakson. Fastgraph, Duplex, Seymor Bits, Putsch 79 and Dexter himself have all released tunes on the label. In mixing up old and new throughout her mix for RA, Steffi showcases one side of where electronic music is at right now with tracks by STL, Omar-S, Pépé Bradock and Patrice Scott. This is one that rides the wave of deep music all the way to the bass-filled floor and back up again.
What have you been working on recently?
I am currently working on a remix for San Proper's release on Studio Soulrock, a relatively new label from Amsterdam. Their second release comes out before the end of this year. I am working on some tracks with Sami Liuski (Bangkok Impact) and on some solo projects as well.
Where and how was the mix recorded?
This mix was recorded at home on two decks with a nice cup of tea on the side.
Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?
The mix contains a blend of important records that have been in my bag for the last months and the stand out for me because of their raw vibe. I am very moved by the fresh wind of more authentic sounding records. Call it neo-Detroit or neo-Chicago, techno or house, I don't care as long as it has that that same quality and soul! It inspires me a lot because of an overkill of digital laptop music from the past few years. It's great to see that there is an answer to the massive minimal tsunami.
You've got roots in Dutch electro and disco, but are now based in Berlin. How does the sound go down at the Panorama Bar?
Panorama Bar is blessed with a great crowd and people are really open-minded there. So they are not attached to one style of music. You can certainly play crazy stuff there, including disco, electro and pop music. Believe me, some crazy, crazy anthems have passed by! I have never committed myself to one style, simply because I can't: There is too much good music to choose from! I like the fact that this place gives you a chance to play with a bigger variety, especially because you always get the minimum of 4 hours of time where you can really tell a story from A to Z.
What's on the horizon for Klakson?
We have just started a series of 12-inches called 'DXR' on our label. It's a new project from my label partner Dexter. He has done a bunch of dance floor tracks, different than what he is normally known for, and will come up with some surprises on the next releases.
What are you up to next?
Together with 2 of my Panorama Bar colleagues Prosumer and Tama Sumo we started a new club night, 5€ admission! We created a chance to go deep and play music that's a little more intimate then a banging club vibe. Fine music, with an underground feel.
