About Etain / Like many artists, Etain draws inspiration from a diverse background of music. With two decades’ worth of musical knowledge and a brain full of sample libraries, anything is possible. Her wide array of tastes range anywhere from avant-garde 80’s bands such as Fad Gadget, all the way to the more contemporary sounds of Marc Houle. A self-taught musician and willing studio experimenter, Etain is a relative production noob, having only twiddled the Ableton knobs for less than three years. Impressively, her first 3-track EP does not suggest this, as the “Coffee EP” is a crisp, well-produced, nicely balanced range of exotic, catchy dance tracks with a hint of Latin rhythms and percussion. A proponent of writing every drum sequence and synthline from scratch (whilst avoiding looped samples), her detail is evident, giving the three tracks their unique disposition and flavour. One can almost imagine a caffeine-injected state of dance euphoria whilst listening to “Java”, with its catchy synth melody and vaguely evident tribal undertones. Or perhaps the exotic “Costa Rican” - more subtle, yet a comfortable dancefloor filler, or even as an accoutrement to your morning cup of Joe. “Costa Rican” [Decaf] is the stripped down version, with a little less caffeine and slightly more minimalism.
