Musicmatter Debut Night at National Underground
Jackson Lee is a New York based DJ whose distinct international sound reflects his unique background and pays homage to his Brazilian roots.
The inspiration for Lee’s music lies in his hometown of Sao Paulo, where his uncle “Lee" ran a popular nightclub in the 1970s.
As a child, he spent countless hours listening to his uncle’s vast collection of vinyl records. His father, also an avid music lover, converted part of their home into a dance floor, where he invited friends over to listen, dance and party well into the wee hours of the next day. He was drawn to and inspired by the festive atmosphere that his father created.
He also recognized early on how music impacted, inspired and moved people, including himself. Influenced by a vast number of artists from the 80’s and 90’s and the sounds of house music originating from N.Y.C. and Chicago stirred something inside of him, leading to the realization that he wanted to become a DJ. At the age of 15, he began to DJ at parties, developing sets that featured touches of his Brazilian roots incorporated into his sets.
He continued to DJ as a hobby while he embarked on a professional career that was not related to music. Around 2000, he merged his professional career with his personal passion by starting up an event production company in Brazil that specialized in professional sound and lighting systems. He produced live bands, shows, corporate events and DJ festivals, giving him a firsthand education on the technical aspect of music.
“As technology has advanced and increased its reach in music, I think any successful artist needs to have a critical understanding of how it enhances and shapes the music we listen to,” Lee said.
In 2006, Lee left South America and moved to New York City where he continued to study music by immersing himself into the city’s hot nightlife scene. Soon after moving to Manhattan, he started to DJ again at clubs and lounges throughout the city. His sets consists of deep, futuristic house, techno with incredible touches of mash-ups and irresistible hypnotic melodies. He is also known for his impeccable mixing skills and to always demand a very energetic set to the audience.
