About TheMixtress / Well it all started off with Gatecrasher and my friends playing the decks when I was the tender 18, I hung out with the boys and as a 'female' interested in music I think I was seen as a bit of a joke to them lol so I was never allowed to play their decks "Just watch I was told" hehe... they obviously did not know me too well ;) As I was not allowed to touch the decks I used to stand over the boys as they were playing and ask questions like...what does this button do...what would happen if I did this?? I used to go home every nyt and listen to the latest Gatecrasher compilation which was mixed by Scott Bond, their resident dj @ the time, I would lie in my bed and count beats (1,2,3,4....) and listen to when Scott Bond would mix into the other record, who better to learn from than a pro :D After about a year of constant listening and questioning, I finally got my chance to play :) My partner @ the time had got one of those "dj in a box" packages which were (somehow) rigged up to 2, 6x9 car speakers in his room lmao...anyways he goes to work tells me "Please Leighan, Don't touch them"..."No I replied" but as soon as he was gone I couldn't resist :O I know I'm BAD!!! Anyways I put the records on and had a bash at mixin, after a few minutes I thought I had them on beat so I took the headphone's off and took a few steps back :O OMG...I was beat mixing :D :D Although I could'nt tell anyone I had managed to do it.
Until a few weeks past and I couldn't keep doing it with no recognition..So eventually I told my partner what I had been doing and he was a little pissed to start with but he soon got over it when he realised we could mix together ;) It went from there really, he encouraged the boys to let me have a go and when they seen I could mix they gave me hints and tips to help me, I enjoyed playing Trance & Hard House, but after about 5 years got a bit bored of it and looked for new styles of music. This was when I stumbled across muisc called Hardstyle, European dance music which was much harder than our UK dance music. I played Hardstyle for bout 3 years using the good old 1210's, which were and still are astounding vinyl decks.
At the start of 2009 I was introduced to the Electronic scene by going to see Utah Saints @ Okupa, Dundee with my friends Maz n Ellen, this nyt changed my perception of music altogether...I now, no longer wanted to listen too, never mind mix Hardstyle music it was dead to me along with the relationship that 1st introduced it to me ;) as I had no decks to play when I split with my ex (they were his)...I then turned to Traktor to mix the electronic styles as I felt I needed to keep on with my dj-in to keep me from thinking...In October 09, I came into some funds which allowed me to buy my own decks, the question now was...1210's or cdj's, always said I would never stop playing vinyl too but the decision in the end was the cdj's too many benefits to just ignore and you have to move with the times and technology if you want to make it in the dj scene these days...Atm I am playing Tech-House and have been for the past 6 months have not really played anything else on my decks and I have not even burn an electronic cd to play as yet :O I have recently dabbled with a bit of Dub Step and DnB very difficult tho, need more practice lol
I have not played @ any clubs worth mentioning before but I have My debut dj set @ The Reading Rooms, Dundee 2 days from now, 29th May 2010 ;)
A BIG shout out to all of you who have supported me and my efforts in breaking out into the music scene, love you always...
