Author - The City / Teacher
Label / Tectonic Recordings
Cat # / TEC052
Released / October 2011
Style / Dubstep
Rating / 3.5

Dropped just ahead of their debut full-length, The City / Teacher is a first peek at Rukspin and Jack Sparrow's new Author partnership. Those anticipating an album preview, however, can think again. Not that this EP is in any way disappointing. Both efforts here are solid Tectonic-quality dubstep of the calibre one has come to—duly—expect from Pinch's stable. "The City" is a guaranteed floor killer and was undoubtedly wielded at some stage over the course of this year's Outlook Festival, and in club outings since. "Teacher," on the other hand, is an ample showcase of the genre's broodier side as woodblocks and bells tumult with techier stabs through an ominous dub vista.

The microscopic trumpet peals in "The City" do—albeit faintly—hint of the melodic and instrumentatal approach planned for the outfit. Ruckspin, after all, has showcased his dub, jazz and reggae influences on his oft-lyrical collection of Ranking records—notably on collaborations with Edward Gooden AKA Quark. But while it would seem that most of Author's penned musicality has been reserved for the album, The City / Teacher is a cracking—and perhaps not quite final—salute to the floor before the pair lead us into more of a sitting-down kind of appreciation.

Wed, 16 Nov 2011@ Jockspock - A 3.5 means that it's good without being special or memorable. The majority of EPs reviewed on this site get a 3.5 and most of them don't have anything 'negative' said about them.

I'm not sure what that quote from the review means however.

Wed, 16 Nov 2011This comment is not about the quality of the music. I haven't heard the record. It's about the quality of the review. Can someone explain to me why this record is given a 3.5 when it is an unqualified good review? There is no negative sentiment or reason anywhere. No ifs or buts at all. Given this, shouldn't it be at least a 4?If it is a 3.5, WHY? And what does this mean?? 'Those anticipating an album preview, however, can think again. Not that this EP is in any way disappointing'. Huh?
