- After two 12-inches of edits by Daphni (Caribou's alter ego), Resista keeps it worldly with a Brazilian classic given a once-over by someone calling himself Tom Croose. The song in question is a samba made famous in the early '70s, although Croose is working with a more recent, and more electric, recording. His edit avails itself of extended chunks of the original, but his interventions go beyond nudged beats and trimmed loops; it rides on a bed of guitars suggestive of Manuel Göttsching, and it's led by a bright, wordless falsetto that's new to the song. The dreamy "Dukes Dub" subtracts nearly all the recognizable elements from the original, leaving just that burble of chords and the sunny singing over the top, sounding for all the world like something by John Talabot or, better still, Caribou. (When you think about it, "Croose" kind of rhymes with "moose," which is kind of like a Caribou. Mystery solved?) Whoever's responsible, it's a beautiful record: one side's an edit done with evident love and respect, and the other channels that love into something new and radiant.
