Dinky - Sealed
Label / Crosstown Rebels
Cat # / CRM087
Released / November 2011
Style / Tech House
Rating / 3.5

There are not many artists who can combine complexity with emotional warmth like the Chilean production supremo Dinky can. Her latest offering for Crosstown Rebels is a compact affair, but maintains the standards she set with her recent Time To Lose It EP for Visionquest. "Sealed" is the deeper, techier cut of the brace on offer. There are elements of Jam & Spoon's classic "Stella" on show here, with a pulsing, wobbly, low-end oscillation underpinning the understated, cotton-soft percussion and snatches of Dinky's own Balearic-style vocal. Switch to B-side "Eeled" for a more dance floor-oriented, housier offering. On the surface it appears to all be about driving energy, with frazzled synths frantically bouncing between left and right speakers. But there's a soft underbelly on display via verdant analogue synths that Tom Middleton would be proud of. This is the sound of an artist really hitting their straps.

Tue, 29 Nov 2011Also it's miles better than some of the pap coming out on Crosstown recently. If you want generic, listen to the Luca Bacchetti EP that they put out recently. Sounds like a Cadenza throw-away (or Cadenza A-side, considering the shite they're putting out these days)

Tue, 29 Nov 2011Don't get these comments, I'm really enjoying this. Dinky's music is always beautiful and dreamy but without being fluffy/muzaky, at least to my ears.
