Maceo Plex - Under the Sheets
Label / No.19 Music
Cat # / 19020
Released / December 2011
Style / House
Rating / 4

Eric Estornel started the year by finally dropping one of 2010's most popular tracks, and looks to be rounding up 2011 in similar fashion. "Under the Sheets" comes as a simple, one-sided piece of vinyl, devoid of B-sides, remixes or anything else that might distract you from the main event. Atmospherically rich from the outset as a result of lavishly layered pads and looped vocal interjections, its main synth line develops slowly over the course of the track, finally coming into prominence post-break; a muted beam of light from an isolated lighthouse, momentarily piercing the relative gloom before sinking back into obscurity. As you might expect, the bassline is phenomenal, striking the perfect balance between finger-slapping funk and pulsing urgency. It's this fine line between accessibility and credibility that so many artists find impossible to reconcile; on the evidence of this at least, Estornel's poise is faultless.

Nope, it's fucking horseshit. When people complain about music being formulaic, they're saying that it's boring and that they'd prefer to be surprised by something every now and again, simple as. There is plenty of music that offers surprises and tries to do something slightly adventurous, and that music deserves more credit, it's a line of reasoning that isn't that hard to understand.

Mon, 27 Feb 2012Maceo is combining stuff, disco, house, techno, soul, not reinventing the wheel. It's all crossover these days. It's a circle which touches all genres already known and done every 5 years.

When you rise to stardom, the pressure gets high. Give him some slack. Everybody wants a tune from you and right now!

Like what in music is NOT formulaic? It's all about formula. Our brains expect formula. Patterns, call/response, relationships between notes vertically and horizontally. Composition. Don't... More
