Dusky - Lost Highway
Label / Anjunadeep
Cat # / ANJDEE137
Released / January 2012
Style / Deep House
Rating / 4

Moving, melodic, moody, double deep house is the stock-in-trade of the Dusky duo of Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman, and on this surprising 12-inch for Above and Beyond's Anjunadeep, they deliver just that. As with their techier Solarity alter-ego, there's an impressive show of craftsmanship here. "Lost Highway" has already vied for a Pete Tong Essential New Tune accolade; strapping the emotional pull of prog trance to Rhodes piano of the MJ Cole variety and then tying it all together with Hybrid-style strings may not sound workable, but the results are nigh-on irresistible. A complex, snaking Bristolian house bassline haunts the bouncy "Three Colours," but scratch away at it and emotive piano phrasings and synth washes are carried along in its undertow.

The deepest is left to the last. There's something of the witchiness about the way darkened synths stabs and clipped percussion cleave away at the minimal-style slo-mo rhythm of "Someone Like You." It brings down the curtain on a highly polished EP of grown-up dance floor electronica.

Tue, 14 Feb 2012All this aside,
Does anyone here know a at tune by the name of 'no more' by Dusky? It was on Will Saul's february mix for XOYO and is a real banger. Been looking for a release date or a cat number everywhere, but it's nowhere to be found. Perhaps someone here could help me solve this mistery? That would be very much appreciated!

Thu, 02 Feb 2012It's been many, many years since I looked at anything Anjuna and I'm pleasantly surprised to see a change of tack in A&R. Whilst this release isn't mind-blowing, it has character. If we want to play the name game, Dusky have popped up on releases with Mark E, Youandewan and Pezzner attached; this is hardly bad company to find oneself in.

My money is on T.Williams' rerub of 'Lost In You' but that's just more my speed. Totally subjective perspective.

Wed, 01 Feb 2012All politics about the label aside, that this kind of music gets a 4 from an RA reviewer is hilarious. A couple of fluffy house tracks with annoying vocal loops and one token 'slow jam'.

Actually it's not shocking in the slightest that this is on Anjunadeep and illustrates the difference between a label like that and the other two you mention perfectly.
