Ma Spaventi / Aroy Dee - Wrecking / Mr. Floyd

  • Marco Spaventi and Aroy Dee must be pretty friendly by now. After relocating to Amsterdam from his native Italy, Spaventi twice collaborated with the M>O>S founder and another local―G-String―under the moniker R-A-G. This time around, the duo's efforts are divided, but the results similarly impressive. Spaventi's cut―"Wrecking"―is up first, taking significant influence from Chicago. Founded on heavy Roland toms, it's also unusually abrasive, dominated by a buzzing throb. Clattering cymbals closely tail each surge of this gargantuan saw-like synth, which Spaventi barely bothers to whittle down with filters. In the end, it could be a more aggressive version of last year's "Rage." On the other side, Dee continues his affair with the slightly melancholy, offering "Mr. Floyd." On this occasion, he does a particularly nice job of mixing opposing sounds. The low-end is a real grumbler, while the main synths soar majestically. Pittsburgh Track Authority hit on a similar kind of combination last year with "Archipelago 6." The difference here, however, is that Dee's coasting synths are often interrupted by clamourous cymbals and claps; another well-placed counterpoint to his bittersweet melodies.
