Gongon - I Could Be There

  • From Deadboy's 2009 funky anthem "U Cheated" to Welsh outfit C.R.S.T.'s UKG homage, Revival EP, and Submerse's poignant pop single Hold It Down, vocals have played a pivotal role in defining the Brighton-based Well Rounded—and form the crux once again in its latest offering. First appearing with buddy Bad Autopsy on the label's Ca$h Antic$ Vol. 2 compilation, I Could Be There is London-based Gongon's debut proper—consolidating his and the 2011 fashion for R&B flavoured house with two slinky dance floor sing-alongs, and another collab. Lead track is a typical Well Rounded number; founded on a singular looped lyric and rolled along a scoopy sub bass. And while formulaic—XXXY, Deadboy, et al—what it lacks in originality it makes back with sheer catchiness. "Come Around" goes down the club pop route, matching recognisably retro—'90s Braindance / Rephlex—uplifting chords with clattering funky percussion and a candied, female-sung melody. Unfortunately "Cactus Banger" is a fairly forgettable bass track, but the strength of the other two—"Come Around" in particular, makes this definitely worth a listen.
