- Voted Most Valuable Person at 2003's International Breakbeat Awards and TCR label owner, Rennie Pilgrem has been assigned the task of mixing up the second installment of Perfecto Breaks and after hearing Lee Coombs' mix, Pilgrem's got a pretty big job on his hands. The last mix CD that he's done was Tribalizm so after a year, the wait is finally over for Pilgrem fans.
Just like Lee Coombs did with his mix, Rennie's filled this CD with his own versions and reworkings of current breakbeat tunes. Rennie's take on Timo Maas' Help Me featuring the vocals of Kelis' sounds a little like Plump DJ's especially with the drum beat and the wicked bassline. Zero's awesome Emit/Collect (which featured on TCR's Hedonizm) has been slightly transformed by Rennie into a synth mashup yet still keeping the feel of the original.
Rennie also features the latest of the latest breaks tunes from likeminded producers such as the new Meat Katie meets Elite Force Ju Ju, on a dirty housebreaks tip which uses a lot more bass than their first effort, Toba (no the CD player isn't broken, there is a 2 second silence in there...). BLIM even gets a little funky with Dust and gives it a slight Apache treatment towards the end.
Mogwai's U Know Y is a guaranteed floor filler whether it be in a house set or a breaks set and it makes for an interesting inclusion here, but it just shows Rennie's eclectic side and it works nicely mixed in with the acid house/old skool breakbeat throwback of Rennie's own London Voodoo featuring the vocals of Countess Renata Kovalcikova.
TCR firm favourites, Koma & Bones get their Donkey Spanner reworked by Rennie into a melodic tech-breaks tune and gets remixed with Goldtrix's It's Love (Trippin) so that her vocals sit nicely on top, proving you can't have a mix CD nowadays without incorporating some form of acappela remix.
To end all the funked-up breaks madness, Pilgrem gets all tripped out with his trippy Tripped-Out Mix of Mara's Turning It On, which gets the mix all mellowed out, showing us that Rennie isn't always about the charged up hard tunes.
Perfecto Breaks mixed by Rennie Pilgrem is a breaks CD featuring some of the best producers in nu-skool breaks (Meat Katie, BLIM, ILS) and the latest tunes all reworked and re-edited to give it that Rennie Pilgrem flavour. Helping him out on the mix is the hedonist himself, Ellis Dee who's Hedonizm CD hasn't left my CD player. This mix wicked and edges out Lee Coombs' mix slightly. Breaks fans have a lot of choice with mix CD's but Perfecto Breaks provide releases that are a little more personal toward the DJ's on the ones and twos
