San Proper / Aroy Dee - Perfume

  • It's funny how wildly an artist's perception of their work can differ from that of the public. Take John Talabot's recent comment, "Why am I always tagged as house or tropical or happy music when I'm making some dark tracks? I don't understand." Aroy Dee isn't so contrary, confirming what we've known all along by subtitling one of his new tracks with San Proper "melancholy." Yes, the M>O>S founder has an enviable talent for birthing house that's both beautiful and sad. The four tracks presented here are no exceptions, even with San Proper collaborating. Both takes of "Usher" are largely similar, set upon bone-dry percs and burnished notes that swish back and forth like a flag in the breeze. Dee's mix, however, adds a measure of resonant bass, an acid-aspiring gurgle and perfect counterpoint to the aching melody. In "Perfume," a bloopy synth trudges wearily alongside scratchy cymbals, with the duo's smooth melodies percolating slowly about, rather than fluttering. A frequent feature on Dee's records, the reprise of the same track slips out the kicks and hats for a shorter beatless excursion, implanting itself even deeper into the psyche as a result.
