The White Lamp - It's You

  • Thwacking snares, Bashmore-style squiggles, a Cure-ish bassline and Roland drum machine patterns. Sound a bit brutal? Far from it in the hands of The White Lamp. "It's You" is a sweet garagey, summer stomp, with soulful vocals and poppy overtones. Which is perhaps why Crazy P's James Baron, in his Ron Basejam guise, was chosen for the first of two remixes. He tweaks the vocals to ride higher in the mix, affording his take on "It's You" a live feel, then paints in some Rhodes piano and a fluid funk bassline—like it's stepped back a decade or more to the Bay Area deep house of Miguel Migs. But it's the more contemporary reworking by Eats Everything and Christophe that will rightfully get the most attention. To a bassline that's been tweaked into something less fancy and more direct, EE and Christophe inject 808 handclaps and squiggly acid passes. It's not as subtle as the original, but that's its job.
