Infestus - Electric Purple

  • In the rigidly structured world of electronic music, it can be nice when someone decides to just break out with an extended solo. Infestus, a newly discovered producer from Lisbon, does exactly that on the eponymous track of his Electric Purple EP. The cut is divided into three distinct chapters, the first consisting of airy chords which gently wax and wane over light-suffused drums. In the middle, electric piano and a fairly standard acid line whirl slowly to the fore, bridging to the aforementioned solo; a gorgeous keyboard romp. Throughout this gentle house journey, chipmunk-ised vocals run laps, encircling the other elements and managing to sound quite tasteful. In a very broad sense, "Afterglow" is kind of similar. Again electric piano features, this time a simple but sound loop which holds sway throughout the duration. Treated vocals also make a return, though here they're a reverbed, mid-'90s kind of wail. Trading off the momentum of cartwheeling synth bloops, stands of crisp, tighly-packed claps bring the track to a euphoric crescendo. Another relatively new producer, Chicago Damn, provides the record's sole remix. Somehow, he twists the inescapably cheerful "Afterglow" into an ominous dirge. It sounds like the kind of house one of the artists on Prologue might make; all sinister echoes, muzzled percussion and weary synth drones. It's a strange but ultimately pleasing contrast.
