Exercise One & Mathew Jonson - Lost Forever in a Happy Crowd

  • In which Berlin duo Exercise One reach out across the ocean in a celebration of deepest, darkest techno with a couple of Canadian pals. Canuck techno deity, Matthew Johnson, patently finds the company of Marco Freivogel and Ingo Gansera conducive to the finest of music making. "Lost Forever in a Happy Crowd" is monstrously, addictively, ceaselessly (it feels longer and even more epic than its ten-minute journey time) good fun. Simple too. A wobbling rhythm track, seemingly emanating from the earth’s core, squats in the mix and doesn’t budge except on those occasions when it feels the need to get nastier. Buttressed by taut, metronomic, percussive clicks and dubby pulses, it’s one for the witching hour. "Blind Trapeze" finds Freivogel and Gansera bearing even more of their snarling techno teeth. Rolling out a rotor blade rhythm, whipcracking hi-hats and jackhammer beats and knitted together by Leonard Flohen’s growling baritone, it’s a brutal storm of a record.
