Robag Wruhme - Leistenhans Zwo

  • You've got to hand it to the man born Gabor Schablitzki. He rarely plays it safe, instead bringing something weird to the table with almost every new record. Last year, this tendency saw him write such beauties as "Pnom Gobal" and "Ende" for his album, Thora Vukk. On the other hand, it also results in things like Leistenhans Zwo, his newest 12-inch for Musik Krause. In the past, Schablitzski has paired his ever-anaemic percussion with quirky hooks ("Donnerkuppel"), or touches of fragile beauty ("Thora Vukk"). It's these types of diversions which are missing from both sides of Leistenhans Zwo. There are beautiful haunting drones in "Brumby Kapell," for instance, but they don't appear until the last quarter, closing out the track's final two minutes sans beats. Before that, there's really only tinny percussion and gloomy stabs to contend with. In "Wolluwe," a 12-minute game of anticipation, the interesting bits are spaced out at such huge intervals as to lose effectiveness. Something new appears every few minutes—booming horn blasts, rodent-like scuffling, dainty alien synthesis or wind and rain noise. Despite this entertaining diversity, the fact that each one is soloed leaves the impression of several promising sketches, rather than a finished whole.
