Alfie - Uncomfortably Numb

  • Having played at fabric two years before he could legally drink there, Alfie is no ingénue—his debut EP for Brighton's Blah Blah Blah proves that. Both tracks are two prime cuts of urban house, kicking off with "Uncomfortably Dumb." Its weapons are a shuddering bassline that rises and drops like a bungee rope, a dubby, itchy synth refrain and swirling, ethereal Detroit pads. But it's "About Midday" that grabs you by the throat and slams you against the wall. While the hubbub of a distant party bubbles underneath, a neo-rave hook kicks in with a sustained assault, colliding into a titanium-strong kick/bass drum combo that rises in its intensity to near breaking point. This is vibrant, tech-tinged, moreish and thoroughly modern house.
