BareSkin - Control Flow EP

  • Control Flow is the debut record from 18 year old Josh Thompson, AKA BareSkin, and another example of the kind of vocal-led brand of conglomerate bass music Losing Suki have been harvesting over the last few years. Opener "Flow" is the EP's garage-y sing-along, somewhere between Last Magpie's "No More Stories" and Jack Dixon's "60 Miles." Its bloopy hook and looped chorus evades monotony with warm synths and disintegrated claps. "Control" heads into deeper house territory, with a hefty dose of UK-skip and more swelling—this time slightly anxious—synths. "Delerium" returns to the bass template, but it's Thompson's choppy vocal work that takes centre stage here that deserves engineering merit, even if its execution is a bit off-putting at times. "Hours," meanwhile, is the fizzy bass-driven conclusion to what amounts to an altogether fun and playful first EP.
