Joy Orbison, Boddika & Pearson Sound - Faint
Label / SunkLo
Cat # / SUNKLOFREE
Released / July 2012
Style / House, Experimental
Rating / 4

From the supremely lopsided "Mercy" to the lurching thrust of "Dun Dun" Boddika and Joy Orbison have been the best kind of weird, and release number three on SunkLo continues that trend—this time with a special guest.

Pearson Sound helps out on "Faint," a track with the same flouncy gallop that marks most of David Kennedy's productions. There's no real "drop" per se. Instead, we get six minutes of horizontal hedging, plateauing in the middle with some quaking hits, every bar revealing more nuances in the surprisingly catchy vocal sample. It's visceral and violent, yet sensual and massaging, and best of all, it's defiantly confusing: when you expect it to finally get going, it combusts into a deafening cloud of abrasive white noise.

The other two tracks see the duo alone again, and more in tune with their past work. "Nil" is a shaker-heavy crawl with threatening basslines that sound like they're ripping up pieces of the dance floor until they form the basis for a mournful melody line in the second half. Finally, the 12-inch trails off with the meandering "Moist," with the duo wreaking havoc on Boddika's studio, as what sounds like a 303 is mutilated and tortured through gasping melodies.

Thu, 26 Jul 2012Not a bad EP but one of the weaker releases involving Boddika & Joy O... The previous releases on this label were much stronger...

Wed, 25 Jul 2012Its right that Andrew focuses on the music in his review, that's his job and probably is sent a free promo copy to do so-but for the rest of us who want to support this music-this release and label-the other part of the story is the totally abusive situation of having to fight over the purposely limited vinyl pressings with speculators. In order to generate hype? This 'limited copies!' trend does nothing for the love of music.
