Tin Man - Going No Where EP

  • Johannes Auvinen keeps up his brisk and diverse output as Tin Man with Going No Where, a two-track digital release for Italy's Exprezoo Records. Recently, the Neo Neo Acid LP showed off his longtime love affair with the 303, and a collaborative record with Cassegrain saw a dive into tougher techno scenarios; here, Auvinen's piano-heavy arrangements are as nifty and floor-friendly as ever, but his own warm, earnest voice on the title track grabs almost all the attention. It's a tale of heartache not too dissimilar from previous vocal efforts, but the lyrics are clearer and more direct than usual, and the track's discrete bits of acid and simple yet perfectly dramatic chord progressions help make it one of the most refined pop songs in the Tin Man catalog. Second track "Sexy" brings the funk, along with the chanted, darkly modulated word "sexy," which makes up most of the track's vocal work. It boasts its own melodic twists aimed toward moving bodies (and in the process, inspiring a few daring looks across the dance floor), but between the two options, I'll almost always choose the beguiling romance of "Going No Where."
