- Steiger (Simon Rogers) makes his impact on big label Bedrock with his emotive ’Postcard From the Edge’. The veteran producer who is one half of Slacker sees his release come with 4 varying reworks. Let’s see how they turned out.
Disc One. On the a-side is the Steiger Original Mix. The track maintains a great flow throughout, beginning with the drums intertwined with the electro baseline rolls that continue throughout. The quirky vocal sample is a feature throughout, often changing in tone to a deeper vocal. The track noticeably gains intensity as it continues with the baselines intensifying with the drums. A delicate piano line comes in midway into the track and is further given focus in the breakdown. A pretty good track from Simon Rogers.
On the flip is the Aurora Mix. Overall a smoother mix then the original, the track features an interesting baseline early as well as some soothing strings. The vocal plays an important role in the remix as does the lovely piano line used in the original mix. Deep into the production a synthy melodic line comes into the production giving the remix a bit of an ‘epic’ edge. Not a bad remix at all to start the remix ball rolling.
Disc Two. On the a-side of this disc is the Edgeland Mix. Probably the tougher of the remixes, the production works its way early with a driving baseline and percussion. The breakdown, midway, introduces the vocal and then slowly builds again introducing some twisted elements into the track. A remix that would surely do the damage on the big systems.
On the flip is the Underdub. Some would say that this dub is more impressive then the original mix by Steiger. It is clearly not as intense as the original with a warmer feel on the whole, with good use of subtle melodic synths and beautiful changing baseline notes giving it a great progressive feel. The vocal and piano elements from the original are intact, perhaps not as frequently, however the melodic line towards the end of the tune sure make up for that. Quality.
A pretty solid release on Bedrock. It’s clear to see that Simon has a talent on making productions interesting and not your standard run of the mill stuff. This is worth checking out as it is no different.
