Move D - Hybrid Minds

  • Having only released a track ("Happylock," for Endless Flight) and a collaborative EP (with Juju & Jordash as Magic Mountain High, for Workshop), the prolific David Moufang has been having an abnormally quiet year. There's little reason to fret. Hybrid Minds, his first solo record for 2012, comes courtesy of London's diverse Electric Minds imprint, and shows he's as dextrous as ever. "Got 2 B" and "Say I" groove as tightly as any number of house productions on the market right now, but do so with a balanced spontaneity that so many of them lack. The former moves with purpose, though not at the expense of looseness. It may have big-room elements like ebullient organ lines and a sizeable breakdown, but its drama never feels cheaply exaggerated. The latter uses a vocal sample so sentimental it could easily wreck a lesser artist's track. Midway through Moufang casually introduces a silvery, New Jack Swing-esque melody, adeptly underscoring the arrangement's romanticism without letting it become too saccharine. Augmenting them is "Useless," a slow, spacious jam that paris hushed vocals with solemn vocoder and sends the record off in pensive calm.
