Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar: neither producer built their current little corners of dance music from scratch, but both have made something that feels entirely new from the pieces. Dolloping plenty of their own personalities into their tracks, each producer is a force to be reckoned with solo. But together on their first EP as JETS, they actually sound like more than the mere sum of their parts. Leisure System, the Berghain club night and record label, have scored an absolute beast of an EP.
While the EP divides nicely into one groovy and one frenetic side, neither puts one producer in the driver's seat: Machinedrum and Edgar merge into a single unit as JETS, with the subtle influence of each sneaking up on you. "In Her City" pushes off softly, its warm (dare I say magenta?) chords and jumpy beats taking nearly two minutes to meld into a luxuriously spacious groove. Even as all its elements click together at long last, the arrangement never quite settles down, building toward a revelation seemingly reached the millisecond after the track's conclusion. "Sin Love with U" begins with a coy snare shuffle and easy-going filtered chords, but by the track's end, those same sounds have beefed up to a wall-rattling stomp.
Though the BPMs ratchet up on the flip, the tracks don't become correspondingly overstuffed. "Mue" could be Edgar's clean sound design mapped to a MIDI template ripped from Machinedrum's Rooms sessions. "Lock Lock Key Key" is all spiraling breakdowns and textured synth washes, yet as the track winds down, JETS seem to release their hold on the euphoria, letting it sputter and evaporate before our eyes. You'll want to pull the needle back and hear it happen all over again.
