Shifted - Sickness By Means Of Clairvoyance
Label / Our Circula Sound
Cat # / OCS005
Released / October 2012
Style / Techno
Rating / 3.5

Fresh from his Crossed Paths full-length, Shifted's newest 12-inch sees the British producer moving in a new direction. "Chapter 69" takes Truss' "Beacon" as a blatant reference point, with a tearing acid line that sounds all too reminiscent of the Our Circula Sound release. It lacks the grit and propulsion, even despite some resonant kick drums. "Feeding," on the other hand, is a two-minute industrial drone, a brooding excursion that pans from ear-to-ear with subtle timpani that adds an ominous dimension to what is a gradual slow burn.

Shifted has always managed to make the more banal and familiar tropes of four-to-the-floor techno interesting, with neverending loops and percussive basslines. It's the same for this B-side.The claps in "Aur Weor," for example, are saturated, drawn out and hardly sound like "claps," while those in "Unveiled" are much more crisp and familiar. And yet, as part of the same repetitive structure, they each offer their respective tracks the same forceful momentum.

Fri, 18 Jan 2013Both Beacon and Chapter 69 are heavily indebted to Nodge's Native Rhythm Electric. I'm only just listening to this EP now, but for me its a strong one indeed; I'd give it four no worries. Its one of Shifted's more interesting EPs imo
