Frak - Wobbler

  • Frak's trilogy of releases for Kontra-Musik should have been sub-titled "dance floor possibilities" or something similar. Each time out the Swedish trio has subtly pushed against things, leaving you with the sense that—yes—this wonky little number could slay, given the right opportunity. On the A-side to their final edition, you don't even have to do much imagining. The boys set up a pretty normal kick drum and let some stabs and an oscillating melody do all the work after that. It's a shockingly "normal" track for a crew of guys who claim to have tried in the past to be "a synth band," but things just end up being "some technoacidweird track in the studio." As Meatloaf might say, though, two outta three ain't bad. "Chrome" sounds like the Frak we know: A faint backwards radio transmission fades in and out of a minimal wave groove. It's so sluggish that the hi-hats almost sound like they're bored of hitting one another by the end. (Or maybe that's just me?) Dance floor possibilities.
