Midnight Special - Midnight Special EP

  • Kevin Griffiths of Tsuba Records fame and ex-Peace Division stalwart Justin Drake have house history going back to the mid-'90s. Joined together as Midnight Special, the duo indulge in some jackhammer locked grooves on the label's debut release. "Steady One" gallops along like the Pony Express to the accompaniment of machine-gun cowbells and a decaying bass throb with subtle acidic hints as undertow. We're unsure whether "Colina" is so-named due to Griffiths sharing a similar dome-headed appearance to the wild-eyed former Italian football ref of a similar name. Either way, it's another foray into dirty, twisted house using the simple formula of fizzy hi-hats, 808 claps, gritty bass and strident female vocal drops. Oddly, despite it's name, "Dancin'" is the most low-key of the trio here but perhaps the most effective, with classic deep and emotive pads, tinkling percussive twitches and quivering analogue bass dabs. Straightforward stuff, but that's the point.
