What better way to start the year than with the first release on your own brand new record label? Australian beatsmiths Inkswel and Freekwency have done just that, with both artists contributing a side of wax to the inaugural Hot Shot Sounds 7-inch.
Inkswel calls shotgun on the A, joining forces with acclaimed soul singer Reggie B on "So Over It." An engaging intro of slack percussive rhythms placed amidst various ethnic flutes and whistles is suddenly transformed into a much more taut, synth-led break. Reggie's smooth flow glides effortlessly over the space-funk beat beneath, his sharp, politically-charged lyrics adding gravitas to the track's otherwise breezy aesthetic. Benny Badge, AKA Freekwency, and his partner-in-crime, singer/songwriter Molly D, opt for something a little more suited to the dance floor, with the track's slinky, '80s-inspired groove left to its own devices. When D's dulcet tones do feature, however intermittently, they prove incredibly pleasing on the ear, further consolidating "Just for Two" as the pick of a ripe debut bunch.
