  • I walked into club Seven just after midnight. Dimitri Frost and Dan Ryan of Escape Project were already pounding some tough tribal grooves. Whatever Girl – “I Know You Can" (That Kid Chris Mix) was being hammered into the quickly filling dancefloor of the main room. These two guys put on a splendid performance with four decks and EFX shared between them. The last half hour of their set, the music ventured more into the breaks sound, with spaced out melodies injected into it. Finishing off with Underworld – “Cowgirl" (Breakbeat Remix) the crowd lapped it up, recognizing the anthem when the familiar tune hit them. Gwill Morris took over next, with Luke Chable whom he was supposed to play the versus set, standing in the background. A no frills start as he threw out some driving progressive tunes which drew more people onto the dancefloor cheering him on. Coco Da Silva – “@ Night” was played; one stormer of a progressive track which I haven’t heard in a long time. Frequently looking up from his mixing to judge the crowd response, this was one DJ that knew exactly how to work a dancefloor. Luke Chable took over and continued to deliver the tunes. The two of them complemented each other well, with Luke giving some an injection of breaks sometimes, while Gwill Morris’ style tended to the progressive side which went somewhat better with the crowd. Main Element – “Take Me Down”, Fabb X – “Driving License”, Accadia – “Into The Dawn”, PQM – “U Are Sleeping (PQM vs Luke Chable Remix)” were some of the identifiable tracks that were played. 3am, and the Our House duo of Kasey Taylor and Sean Quinn took over the decks. They kept the music progressive for half an hour before venturing into the sound of breaks, showcasing material from their new album. Meanwhile, all through the sets, the visual projection screens behind the DJ booth flashed some pretty trippy and interesting visuals, done by Koan. Over to the lounge room, Phil K was definitely earning the cheers of his supporters as he played a wicked set of breaks. It was great to see this local legend in action; his skills on the CDJs are second to none. Copies of his DJ Magazine cover mount CDs were given out to those in front. Upstairs, the mood was more intimate and cosy with the drum n bass DJs playing Chill & Bass; a genre I’ve never really come across before. Interesting music that has the elements of Drum & Bass except for the more pitched down tempo and mellower sounds. 4am, back into the main room, just in time to hear Dave Gahan – “Dirty Sticky Floors” being dropped and the music direction had changed into a more progressive/tribal sound. This was definitely the more distinct sound both of them are better known for. 5am and what in my opinion was the track of the night, Kasey Taylor subtly mixed in MAS Collective – “In My Mind”, an insane dance floor killer! This was a white label that has seen the likes of Digweed caning it in his sets last year. Hardly did I ever expect to hear this in a club. Nearing the end of their set, Miro – “The One I Run To” was played, and by now, the floor was sparse with most of the clubbers having gone home, those still remaining appreciating the tunes that were played. Mark DiCristo, one third of Highland was up next. Taking over from where Kasey and Sean left off. Superbly layering on the progressive tracks, he gamely showed little concern over the almost empty dance floor and proceeded to play a fantastic progressive set for those few left dancing in front. The let down of the night, however, was when he was asked to stop his set 40 minutes into it, due to the room being too empty. Not looking too happy about it too I might add. My opinion was it was really a pity that Mark DiCristo had to have such a late set, and the main room being so empty at the end. Overall though, with so many big weights of Australia’s own dance music talent playing, the night went down well indeed.
