If you missed Alan Backdrop's precursor to this release (Excursion A, unsurprisingly) it comes highly recommended, although it's a completely different animal to Excursion B. The calm opening of the 10-minute epic "Ramas" utterly belies the franticness that follows, as a trickling of tranquillity slowly fades in the wake of a 140 BPM-plus thud. And yet, as fast-paced as it is, "Ramas" could hardly be described as "pumping"; its kick is muted throughout, the hushed tones of the other elements creating a hypnotic rather than hyper atmosphere.
"Anfon" opens in similarly watery style, but keeps that fluidity at the forefront of the mix as the track progresses. Eschewing a beat structure, save for a gently chugging tribal clatter, its strength lies in the richness of its palette—thick washes of deep organic hues contrasting exquisitely with lighter shades of mechanical clicks, fizzes and whistles.
