Memory9 - The Abyss Within

  • Citing Amon Tobin, Squarepusher and Machinedrum as influences, Italian-born artist Gadi Sassoon has spent the last five years immersing himself in London's bass scene. In addition to a residency for Soundcrash, he's hooked up with the Tempo Clash collective, and has made regular appearances on Ninja Tune's Solid Steel radio show. Once again releasing on his own Mnemonic Dojo imprint, The Abyss Within comprises three originals and two remixes. Recalling the aesthetic of Photek's landmark output in the late '90s, the title track loops understated jungle percussion against a cinematic backdrop. The influence of Machinedrum is most prominent on the rapid skip of "Two Bodie of Venus." "Escape The Ice" is slightly more original thanks to its suspension of jazz clutter over scuttling percussion. For the remixes, Tempo Clash resident Om Unit gives the title track a bit of guttural thrust, while Dutch newcomer H-Sik delivers a sci-fi-themed alternative.
