Serious's 7th birthday

  • I have been to Serious at The Cross three times now in the past 4 months and it can really be a bit hit and miss. This time however Serious really put on a special show for their 7th Birthday. Perhaps as it had been so hot in London lately that people were avoiding the clubs but it was surprisingly quiet for The Cross. An arrival at 11:30pm can often result in a queue snaking up to the cab rank however this time there was no queue and inside it was only moderately busy. I was not complaining though as it was a nice change from the usual squeeze. The Cross always has a great friendly crowd who are a little older and more style conscious so its always a good night. Music wise this was one of the best nights I have had of late. Rarely do you want to keep racing between different rooms as the music and DJ's are just so good. The funky room is one of the best and most intimate around and its designed in such a way that the crowd all seem to face into the DJ booth. Gavin White was first on when I went in there and he knows how to party, really getting the crowd going. He has that aura of one of your mates playing at a house party and everybody loves it including him. He dances around along with the rest of the crowd and you know he is not just going through the motions like some other DJ's you see around. Dropping tunes like Solitare's "I Like Love" and "E Samba" by Junior Jack. If you wanted to have a few quiet drinks to settle into the night Gavin wasn't going to keep you off the dance floor for long. Next a visit to the main room where Taul Paul was absolutely rocking the place with his own brand of tough house. I haven't seen Taul Paul for a long time and he has kind of fallen off the register lately but he is still a class DJ and I was loving it. The funky room (hosted by Dusted) continued with the good music with another DJ (who I can't remember his name) then 2Funky. As I said earlier about Serious being a bit hit and miss. Well musically this time they hit it very well. Back in the hard room and I caught Eddie Halliwell's set. If you haven't heard of this guy yet you really need to get out more as he will be one of the top very soon, having been taken on by Tidy Trax and playing with Judge Jules a lot lately. Never have I seen a DJ be so technically skilled. Using the CD deck to create his own loops and then showing some amazing scratching skills. Watching a guy like this completely make up tracks on the fly is amazing. He was spot on 100% of the time as well. The whole crowd was just in amazement. The only downside of the night was that most of the place was like a sauna. Apart from the main room the air con didn't seem to be working. At least Serious were a bit on top of it and were handing out free ice lollipops. A lot of the crowd spent a large part of the night in the great outside terrace which was nice and cool. As the night got later and Norman J came on in the funky room the music slowed down a little and the crowd got thinner. I left about 5:30am, tired but with a bit smile on my face. The Cross really is the best club in London with a great setup, good crowd and last night, excellent music.
