Rick Wilhite - Freedom School DJ Series Vol. 1

  • Detroit house carries a lot more weight than Detroit techno these days, and Rick "The Godson" Wilhite is a big part of that. On his own and as a member of 3 Chairs, he helped carve out the dusty, rough-edged sound that remains so prevalent nearly 20 later, not least among cutting-edge acts like Kyle Hall or the artists on L.I.E.S. and Sex Tags Mania. And he's still on top of his game: Freedom School DJ Series Vol.1, the latest release from the Tokyo label Freedom School, is just as bold and modern as anything from that younger crop. The release shows three very different sides of Wilhite's sound. "Tribute & Respect" is one for balmy summer nights, with African chants and a seductive bassline. "Techno Dust" does what it says on the tin, all meaty kicks and an overdriven arrangement that somehow makes the whole thing feel wet and squishy. Obscured by reverb and delay, "Kinky" is like a sinister club track perceived through a fog. Given the unfussy feel of the whole thing, it's little surprise the record is mastered by Omar-S.
