Quell - Boxer EP

  • Over the past six years, Greek-born producer Quell has gradually honed his take on US house and techno. And 2013 is shaping up to be a key year for him: his debut long-player, Them Crowd Kids, was recently released on Ibadan Records, quickly followed by the Boxer EP on 2020 Vision. For fans of the album, this package will likely suit your tastes. Focusing on the deeper, housier side of Quell's sound, the four tracks bear the mark of classic '90s New Jersey house, presenting various combinations of Kerri Chandler-inspired stabs, pads and swinging drum lines. "Check You Out" kicks things off at a pace, laying stark stabs within a crowded, impatient frame. "Don't Go" conveys the point more simply, placing greater emphasis on the stripped-back weight of the groove before veering off down more emotive paths. "Loose Meanings" is more mature still, coating infectious basslines and strapping stabs in a veil of gentle strings, before "Right" throws up the most contemporary, though least engaging, offering.
