Terekke - YYYYYYYYYY

  • Terekke remains one of the most enigmatic artists on the L.I.E.S. roster. The Brooklyn-based producer's output has been scarce, with just one EP, Damn, and a track on the American Noise compilation to his name. His soupy-thick transmissions lumber along with a kind of hidden funk, seeping out of the speakers like steam vapor venting from a street. Though his previous outings have explored a similar strain of straight-to-tape house, Yyyyyyyyyy is his finest work to date. "Bank" sounds like a Floating Points dub left to bake and warp in the sun. Chugging along for eight minutes, the knackered drums are offset by gently billowing synths and a delicious bassline. "Piano" rewards the close listener, with muffled drums and distant chords peeking out from behind a quietly purring tape loop. At first, "Amaze" feels like a sombre take on Actress's "Ivy May Gilpin." Again, it's coated in tape hiss, the quasi-tribal rhythm loping along unhurriedly. The hats are buried so deep in the mix you have to wipe away several layers of muck to reach them, while a distant vocal is drowsily filtered in and out. The overall effect is, like the whole EP, quietly exquisite.
