- Sowing Paranoia's dub-inflected Area 51 label presses just 100 copies of each 12-inch, and they're weighty, introspective affairs steeped in concept and symbolism. His newest venture, Apparent Horizon, takes a similar approach but is a little more generous, with 200 copies of its first record, Hera.
The problem with Sowing Paranoia's limited runs is that his Madrid crew—Jorge Bule, The Transhumans, DJ F.—consistently produce special music, but a lot of people don't get to hear it. The gentle interplay of rippling chords and wiry percussion on Bule's "Rods From God" is worth anyone's time. Bule's other effort, "Helios 1," isn't quite as interesting, but its stumbling drums and dank, claustrophobic vibe are still effective.
It's Sowing Paranoia, under a new alias, Hunab, who really brings the record to life. Recalling his own Research Music Lab LP on Silent Season last year, "Ixtab" moves with both speed and grace. "Sinus" is streaked with a similarly luminescent melody, but adds tinkling notes to the mix for an effect very much like Conforce's "When It Appeared." And just like Conforce, Sowing Paranoia's attention to detail gives his work a startlingly vivid quality. It's a shame only 200 people will be able to enjoy it.
